「Lakme拉克美」的內容是敍述東西方異國愛情故事：Lakme是印度祭司的女兒，愛上了英國軍官。Mallika是她的女僕，「花之二重唱」正好發生在Lakme遇見英國軍官前。
在英國軍官沒有出現前，主僕兩人詠唱倆人世界的幸福美好，結果被軍官看到，而愛上Lakme。
最後以悲劇收場，Lakme犧牲生命化為神祇，救了軍官。而軍官竟然後悔愛上Lakme，想回到軍中．
